Lighthouse Point Cottage

What could be better than a lighthouse keeper’s cottage; the perfect setting, the sea, beaches, wildlife, utter tranquillity, and an unrivalled location; a little slice of paradise.

Lighthouse Point is a large one-bedroom single storey holiday cottage, beautifully presented and designed to be the place to completely unwind and escape from day-to-day humdrum and pressures.          

The highlight is undoubtedly the south facing sunroom which offers captivating views across the sea and Toward lighthouse. It is this spot where your heart rate slows and the minutes spent gazing at the marine traffic stretch into hours; there are regular sightings of trawlers, submarines and cruise ships.

But it is not just the two-legged guests who have the ultimate holiday escape, the cottage is dog friendly and with a beach only two minutes’ walk away, everyone gets to go outdoor swimming! For those who don’t fancy a quick dip during their beach walk, there is a chance seals will be seen; porpoises and dolphins are often spotted and if you are very lucky, there are otters too!      

If you can drag yourself away from the incredible views at the cottage, the area in which Lighthouse Point sits is itself stunning; the Cowal peninsula offers wonderful lochs, forest trails and glens, imposing hills and mountains, and a variety of historical sites.

All in all, doggie and human heaven!

The Space

Mostly on one level, there is a single step to access at the front and two internal steps,the cottage is spacious and beautifully presented. The lounge is a good size, leading into the south facing sunroom with its stunning views. The bedroom has a king size bed (pillows and duvet are feather filled, but others are available if required). The kitchen is small but well appointed with dishwasher, washing machine, cooker, hob and airfryer. As with the kitchen, the shower room is at the rear of the cottage.

Outside, there is a good sized garden; only the rear, which is accessed from the kitchen and sunroom, is fully enclosed. There is plenty of parking space on the drive; a car and boat trailer can easily be accommodated.

Toward village is small and without facilities, the nearest shop and two pubs (both serving food) are in Innellan which is 3 miles north and the town of Dunoon a further 4 miles distant. A regular bus service operates from almost immediately outside the property. There are public EV chargers in both Dunoon and Sandbank.

We know from our own experiences that dog friendly cottages can often lack style and comfort. At Lighthouse Point, we regard dogs as an important part of the family; they are our guests too and we work to ensure the cottage is a special and relaxing place for all, four legged or two.

In fact, we aren’t just dog friendly, more doggie indulgent!  

We don’t and have never charged extra for our doggie guests. They receive their own foodie welcome pack (usually roast dinner and ice cream, no less!), plus a welcome note from Abbi, our Border Terrier; she gives them the heads up on her favourite walks and cafes – written in woof language of course! There are nautically themed eco dog toys plus their own dog branded towels and a dog first aid kit; thankfully not yet brought into action. They even have their own visitors’ book; to make recommendations for walks and café stops to their fellow woofers.

Let’s imagine…………….

The day began with an unhurried alfresco breakfast, sitting, gazing at the most amazing sea views, contemplating what to do that day. The cottage is so relaxing, maybe it will be a stay at home day, with a wee beach walk later?  

Or maybe take a trip to Portavadie’s infinity pool overlooking Loch Fyne, perhaps a visit to the Grade A listed church and its rare water powered organ, or a walk around Benmore Botanic Gardens? And of course, any plan would need to include a leisurely break at one of the area’s many, many cafes, the vast majority of which are dog friendly.

In fact, it was the dog who chose where to go that day; a great time was had frolicking and playing on the huge, wide sandy beach at Ostel Bay, with its opportunities for swimming (dogs and owners) and the stunning views across the water to the hills of Arran. 

Then back home, along with a sneaky extra cake or two, to re-take the morning’s seating position, gazing out to sea as the world’s last sea going paddle steamer steams past the window; a trip on P.S Waverley was pencilled in as a definite plan for another day.

Replete from that lovely lunch out and a few wee glasses of the locally made ale, you are completely relaxed and don’t notice time is moving on; after the dramatic sunset, the light begins to draw in.  Then you saw the lighthouse lamp begin its hypnotic and comforting night’s work, casting its sweeping powerful beam into the distance, which together with the gentle snoring of your happy but exhausted sleeping pooch brings the ultimate level of contentment. Sleep beckons……… sweet dreams.
